Paradise Lost? August 20 - 24.

Time has not been on our side and this has prompted some rushed decision making.

We visited two schools and with Connor's enthusiastic approval, we registered him at EMMA school armed only with information about school fees and uniform costs. The extra financial gulps came when we got the lists of school supplies which included a lab coat, guitar and accessories, scientific calculator, USB stick and art supplies among many others, the pricey required textbook list, digital resource fees, insurance fees etc. To be fair the school has small class sizes and offers many of the things we wanted available to him including extracurriculars such as swimming and tae kwon do.

Some of the supplies.
Rather more disheartening is our rush decision to secure a 6-month rental close to the new school in the 3 days before school started. We only visited 3 places very briefly and chose the one with a pool. Upon moving in we learned some very hard lessons.

Looks can be deceiving.

1. Said pool was cloudy and untreated since there was currently no maintenance company to look after it. The same applies to the grounds, hallway etc which have not been cleaned in absence of the maintenance company.

Green, murky and out of commission.

2. The air conditioner was not working and could not be checked until after the weekend. The apartment registered 90 degrees by the height of the afternoon and we all tried to tolerate things while sitting in pools of our own sweat for two days!

3. Bedtime! Well already being boiling hot with no relief was bad enough but the final clincher was that the club on the corner, which began playing quite enjoyable live Mexican music in the afternoon (I was even grooving to the beats), continued to pump out the loudest music possible ALL NIGHT! This was Saturday, it is now Wednesday and the music has played until about 6 AM every night. JEEZ!

The open windowed club.
Oh good, cheap drinks to go with the booming music!

Okay so now we are tired, peed off and wondering what to do.  Any decision will result in the loss of money but we are hopeful of finding a happy solution.

Our new Airbnb - expectation v reality (Feb 10-Mar 9, 2024)

Our Airbnb experiences have generally been very good with accurate photos and helpful hosts. This time was disappointing. The condo is very modern with 10ft ceilings and in a great location but it was clear that the management company is not aware or keeping up with needed repairs - sunken sofa cushions, lifting tiles, calcified faucet, stained sheets, and completely broken patio furniture that had just been left!! Their response to our messages was quite unhelpful - they didn't seem to care that much so our honest review will reflect this.  Instagram ...   ... reality ...replaced with two mismatched indoor chairs!! Playa as a whole has gotten busier and outside of the reality of inflation and a stronger peso, everything is much more expensive as happens in popular tourist spots. We are going to look at other more affordable places in Mexico to spend the winter months.

Painful winter travel from the Prairies

Minus 30 degrees below zero apparently causes problems for aeroplanes in the Prairie provinces. We were scheduled to depart at 6.30am January 13th Saskatoon-Calgary-Cancun but received word of cancelation the day before. They rescheduled us to depart at 7.30pm  but added in an overnight stay in Vancouver (now SK-VAN-CAN). On Saturday morning we learned of yet another change, slightly better, to SK-Edmonton overnight-CAN, however by Saturday afternoon we got another notice of de-icing problems, crew delays, and departure changes upon which we would be updated within the hour. We waited for the update but no update came. Google informed us that our flight was canceled. Westjet had apparently abandoned us! At the same time, adding to our stress was that Nick was travelling with us but on a separate booking and his cancelations did not coincide with ours. First he would possibly land in Cancun before us, then with his reschedule he would lose almost a week of his vacation.  It was...

Trolley Tour in Campeche

We booked this quintessential tourist activity and it was charming. It was of course, a little less amazing when the tour took us around the very neighbourhood in which we were staying, so maybe we should have done the tour earlier on! Independence Square Fisherman statue outside our local OXXO
