Emergency - paging Doctor Beat!

So this hacking cough and cold of Jordan's was not letting go after a week of medication so he returned to the doctor's office for further consultation. After checking his blood pressure, the doctor was alarmed at the high readings and to be on the safe side, recommended that Jordan should go to the hospital for treatment to bring it down right away.

We walked across to the Hospiten private hospital just outside the gates of Playacar around 11.30 AM and within minutes forms were filled out and Jordan was in an evaluation room with a triage nurse. Everyone was bilingual which was wonderful.

They hooked him up to a blood pressure monitor and after a consultation with the doctor a number of tests were performed including blood tests, EKG and chest x-ray. Then they began treatment for the continuous heavy coughing.

Being given meds by nebulizer.

The doctor recommended that Jordan should remain in the hospital until the results were back and his BP had come down satisfactorily. They transferred him to a private room and made sure he was comfortable.

The room had a large bathroom with shower, couch and flatscreen TV!
I had to leave to meet Connor at 2 PM. As Jordan was doing okay at this stage we continued on with Connor's Tae-Kwon-Do grading and told him that his dad was still getting taken care of by the doctors so he wouldn't worry.

When we went back to see him, he had eaten a very nice hospital meal and was feeling well.
The consultant had also confirmed that all his tests had come back clear. They concluded that he had a bad chest infection which they would treat with antibiotics and they began meds to lower his BP.

Connor and I left at 8 PM after tucking into the second meal they brought in (a pretty tender steak with salad that Jordan did not have an appetite for!) and at 9.30 PM Jordan let us know that the doctor didn't think he would need to stay overnight and would be discharged within the hour. He left with a prescription for meds to continue his healing process, a full report, itemized bill, and his x-rays.

So our first experience with a hospital in Playa was expensive but Jordan received fast, excellent treatment and you can't put a price on your health - well you can - our bill for the care was $20,000 pesos/$1450 CND. Apparently, the regular general hospital or Red Cross hospital charge quite a bit less but let's hope we don't have to find out again anytime soon!!

Our new Airbnb - expectation v reality (Feb 10-Mar 9, 2024)

Our Airbnb experiences have generally been very good with accurate photos and helpful hosts. This time was disappointing. The condo is very modern with 10ft ceilings and in a great location but it was clear that the management company is not aware or keeping up with needed repairs - sunken sofa cushions, lifting tiles, calcified faucet, stained sheets, and completely broken patio furniture that had just been left!! Their response to our messages was quite unhelpful - they didn't seem to care that much so our honest review will reflect this.  Instagram ...   ... reality ...replaced with two mismatched indoor chairs!! Playa as a whole has gotten busier and outside of the reality of inflation and a stronger peso, everything is much more expensive as happens in popular tourist spots. We are going to look at other more affordable places in Mexico to spend the winter months.

Painful winter travel from the Prairies

Minus 30 degrees below zero apparently causes problems for aeroplanes in the Prairie provinces. We were scheduled to depart at 6.30am January 13th Saskatoon-Calgary-Cancun but received word of cancelation the day before. They rescheduled us to depart at 7.30pm  but added in an overnight stay in Vancouver (now SK-VAN-CAN). On Saturday morning we learned of yet another change, slightly better, to SK-Edmonton overnight-CAN, however by Saturday afternoon we got another notice of de-icing problems, crew delays, and departure changes upon which we would be updated within the hour. We waited for the update but no update came. Google informed us that our flight was canceled. Westjet had apparently abandoned us! At the same time, adding to our stress was that Nick was travelling with us but on a separate booking and his cancelations did not coincide with ours. First he would possibly land in Cancun before us, then with his reschedule he would lose almost a week of his vacation.  It was...

Trolley Tour in Campeche

We booked this quintessential tourist activity and it was charming. It was of course, a little less amazing when the tour took us around the very neighbourhood in which we were staying, so maybe we should have done the tour earlier on! Independence Square Fisherman statue outside our local OXXO
