Escape from the cold (Mexico, March 12 - 27)

Jordan received a job offer for an April 2nd and the March school break was approaching so we decided to take advantage of the time and booked a trip back to Playa Del Carmen. This was also a time to help with the healing after the sad loss of Jordan's mum.

We arrived to a torrential rain storm and wondered if we would be unlucky with the weather but the first few overcast days gave us a chance to ease in to the sun gently.

Our AirBnB apartment had the biggest tree in front of it that provided great shade and reduced the need for air conditioning.

Condo at Calle 14 and Avenida 45.

First walk back on the beach.
We visited our friends Tom and Debbie played euchre and enjoyed rooftop pool and hot tub in their building.

Debbie and I could not win that day!

Pool was a bit cool ....

... but he tub was hot!

Rooftop snack.
We also caught up with friends, Kathy and Ron and went to see our favourite Playa performers, The Lovers Duo.
Alejandra has a voice like Amy Winehouse!

We met Kathy and Ron in Belize too!
Without the restriction of the super early school mornings and being in a more central location, our experience was quite different. We got to see more of Playa at night and explored the wonderful dining scene of the central area. Eating out is so affordable that we took full advantage of at least one meal each day!

The weather returned to hot and humid but the sea was very churned up and there was a lot of sargassum so we did not get to spend as much time in the water but we really enjoyed any time we could at the beach.

During the second week, we decided to jump on the collectivo bus to the town of Akumal . It is known for its sea turtle sanctuary but we did not have our snorkeling equipment and we had to pay $100 pesos each to get 'into' the beach. There was a fair bit of seaweed but the water temperature was nice. We also enjoyed a great lunch.

We all got sick with varying degrees of coughs and colds but the time away was fantastic. We had booked a return trip to the airport with Xelbor Cabs who arrived early and delivered us to the airport in plenty of time. Our return was via Winnipeg and the travel day was long but everything went smoothly.

Our new Airbnb - expectation v reality (Feb 10-Mar 9, 2024)

Our Airbnb experiences have generally been very good with accurate photos and helpful hosts. This time was disappointing. The condo is very modern with 10ft ceilings and in a great location but it was clear that the management company is not aware or keeping up with needed repairs - sunken sofa cushions, lifting tiles, calcified faucet, stained sheets, and completely broken patio furniture that had just been left!! Their response to our messages was quite unhelpful - they didn't seem to care that much so our honest review will reflect this.  Instagram ...   ... reality ...replaced with two mismatched indoor chairs!! Playa as a whole has gotten busier and outside of the reality of inflation and a stronger peso, everything is much more expensive as happens in popular tourist spots. We are going to look at other more affordable places in Mexico to spend the winter months.

Painful winter travel from the Prairies

Minus 30 degrees below zero apparently causes problems for aeroplanes in the Prairie provinces. We were scheduled to depart at 6.30am January 13th Saskatoon-Calgary-Cancun but received word of cancelation the day before. They rescheduled us to depart at 7.30pm  but added in an overnight stay in Vancouver (now SK-VAN-CAN). On Saturday morning we learned of yet another change, slightly better, to SK-Edmonton overnight-CAN, however by Saturday afternoon we got another notice of de-icing problems, crew delays, and departure changes upon which we would be updated within the hour. We waited for the update but no update came. Google informed us that our flight was canceled. Westjet had apparently abandoned us! At the same time, adding to our stress was that Nick was travelling with us but on a separate booking and his cancelations did not coincide with ours. First he would possibly land in Cancun before us, then with his reschedule he would lose almost a week of his vacation.  It was...

Trolley Tour in Campeche

We booked this quintessential tourist activity and it was charming. It was of course, a little less amazing when the tour took us around the very neighbourhood in which we were staying, so maybe we should have done the tour earlier on! Independence Square Fisherman statue outside our local OXXO
