Travels in the times of the Covid - Week 13

Final week and the weather has come back beautifully.

Monday Jan 25 - long walk at lunchtime. Chicken and mole for supper at home.

Cool Guadi type apartment on CTM

Tuesday Jan 26 - super hot, Jordan went for a ride at lunch but we stayed home all day. Shrimp and rice pilaf for supper.

Wednesday Jan 27 - went to walk on the track at the stadium. Leftover shrimp, bacon and chicken with rice for lunch. Extra Spanish practice today. Ordered Bait Lajam tacos and tortas for takeout. Connor played online with friends and Jordan and I went for a walk around 8.30 to see how things were - 5th Ave while being quieter in the day is still buzzing at night.

Thursday Jan 28 - what a day! We had to get our PCR tests done today so arrived at Playalab at 9.45 a.m. to fit the 72-hour window to find that they were closed already because they had no more tests available! They only open at 8 a.m.! We walked a couple of mins to the next place I had scoped out but found that they also could not do the test for us! Feeling stressed, we went home to do a bit more research and found that Amerimed Hospital might be a possibility. We walked the 15 mins to it to find that the earliest appointment they had was on Saturday! Now we were getting hot and extra stressed. We went home to work out our options. Amazingly, Jordan reached out to Jason (shuttle driver/the guy who probably knows everything) and he put us in touch with a qualified tech who would come to the house to do our tests at 3 p.m.

Went for lunch at Los Hijos tostaderia, delicious, but I forgot my purse at home! Stress head for sure. Luckily it was only a short run home to get it.

Well ... in-home testing was a very convenient but not the most comfortable experience. It was quickly and professionally completed and Jason came along to add some light relief to the process!

Technician with mobile tests.

Nasal swab - weird!

Throat swab - gag!

The results would be emailed in 24 hours.  Went for a walk.

Friday Jan 29 - Beach day.

Lovely fresh air and not too busy as we awaited our results. Today it was also announced that Canada was cancelling all flights to Mexico and the Caribbean until the end of April. We would just make it on one of the last flights back!

3 p.m. came and went and we still had no results. We had to wait anxiously for 5 more hours until the email finally came delivering the good news that we had all tested negative! Feeling relieved we went out for a walk and a late-night celebratory bite and cocktails at Muy Salsa on 5th Ave.

Saturday Jan 30 - enjoying the last day of our amazing 3-month "put Covid on the back burner" adventure.

It has become a routine that I enjoy and want to continue with.

It was overcast and a bit windy but still a beautiful day to spend at the beach having lunch at our regular hangout spot.

Fish Burger with a view.

Garlic shrimp

Garlic fish filet

The police were making their rounds with the sniffer dog today!!

Sunday

We awoke at 5 a.m. and were picked up by Jason at 6 a.m. Smooth run to airport, check-in and baggage check easy. They checked our negative covid result as well as passport. Empty departure lounge and got 4K steps in!  Our plane was a Dreamliner with good legroom and it was half empty. Watched two movies and had a little nap.

Arrived about 2 p.m. Empty arrivals lounge, all documentation in order, they check you have registered with ArriveCan and check your negative Covid test result. We called an Uber and headed up to a virtually empty departure lounge to meet the driver and were home by 4 p.m.

On to quarantine!

It was an amazing trip in the times of the Covid and we can't wait until we can travel again!

Our new Airbnb - expectation v reality (Feb 10-Mar 9, 2024)

Our Airbnb experiences have generally been very good with accurate photos and helpful hosts. This time was disappointing. The condo is very modern with 10ft ceilings and in a great location but it was clear that the management company is not aware or keeping up with needed repairs - sunken sofa cushions, lifting tiles, calcified faucet, stained sheets, and completely broken patio furniture that had just been left!! Their response to our messages was quite unhelpful - they didn't seem to care that much so our honest review will reflect this.  Instagram ...   ... reality ...replaced with two mismatched indoor chairs!! Playa as a whole has gotten busier and outside of the reality of inflation and a stronger peso, everything is much more expensive as happens in popular tourist spots. We are going to look at other more affordable places in Mexico to spend the winter months.

Painful winter travel from the Prairies

Minus 30 degrees below zero apparently causes problems for aeroplanes in the Prairie provinces. We were scheduled to depart at 6.30am January 13th Saskatoon-Calgary-Cancun but received word of cancelation the day before. They rescheduled us to depart at 7.30pm  but added in an overnight stay in Vancouver (now SK-VAN-CAN). On Saturday morning we learned of yet another change, slightly better, to SK-Edmonton overnight-CAN, however by Saturday afternoon we got another notice of de-icing problems, crew delays, and departure changes upon which we would be updated within the hour. We waited for the update but no update came. Google informed us that our flight was canceled. Westjet had apparently abandoned us! At the same time, adding to our stress was that Nick was travelling with us but on a separate booking and his cancelations did not coincide with ours. First he would possibly land in Cancun before us, then with his reschedule he would lose almost a week of his vacation.  It was...

Trolley Tour in Campeche

We booked this quintessential tourist activity and it was charming. It was of course, a little less amazing when the tour took us around the very neighbourhood in which we were staying, so maybe we should have done the tour earlier on! Independence Square Fisherman statue outside our local OXXO
