Manzanillo Week 1 Jan 26-Feb 1

Monday 26
We took an Uber to the Central Bus station and boarded our Premera Plus bus headed for Manzanillo (scheduled at 4hrs 20 mins/760 pesos). The bus was luxurious with individual entertainment systems but our front row seats had a footrest in an awkward position that could not be adjusted. Construction along the highway led to a delay of about 45 mins. We took a local taxi to our beachfront apartment less than 10 minutes away. for 80 pesos.

The apartment is spotless with fabulous views. For dinner we strolled along the main road and settled on the Casablanca restaurant located in a resort hotel and enjoyed 3x2 coctails, tuna tostadas and wings while enjoying our first sunset.

Tuesday 27
We had a peaceful night lulled to sleep by the lapping waves and enjoyed a very relaxed day with a walk on the beach. There do not appear to be many restaurant choices in the immediate area.

Avacado and sweet tomato toast lunch at home

Great stock and prices at the closest mini super

Wednesday 28
Lunch at Don Julio and Soriana for groceries, gorgeous sunset views.
Thursday 29
Lazy gaming by the pool, chuleta and veg for supper.

Friday 30
There was a strange pop up rave that took place between midnight and 1AM ish and then we were regaled with the customary roll call of the naval cadets at 7am!
Jordan's shoulder has been hurting badly so we went to Walmart to pick up a percussion massager followed by gaming at the pool. Today we had a visual  treat of the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship visiting the bay.

Saturday 31
Another chilled day spent gaming poolside, watching the ship action and supper at Casablanca. This time it was busier, with very slow service and a disappointing portion of ribs for the price. The tuna tostadas were very good again though.

Sunday February 1

I needed to rest my knee today so we did nothing but chill poolside, gaming, listening to the super loud (but good) music being blasted by our fellow Airbnb guests. The beach was atmospheric with the weekenders.

Our new Airbnb - expectation v reality (Feb 10-Mar 9, 2024)

Our Airbnb experiences have generally been very good with accurate photos and helpful hosts. This time was disappointing. The condo is very modern with 10ft ceilings and in a great location but it was clear that the management company is not aware or keeping up with needed repairs - sunken sofa cushions, lifting tiles, calcified faucet, stained sheets, and completely broken patio furniture that had just been left!! Their response to our messages was quite unhelpful - they didn't seem to care that much so our honest review will reflect this.  Instagram ...   ... reality ...replaced with two mismatched indoor chairs!! Playa as a whole has gotten busier and outside of the reality of inflation and a stronger peso, everything is much more expensive as happens in popular tourist spots. We are going to look at other more affordable places in Mexico to spend the winter months.

Painful winter travel from the Prairies

Minus 30 degrees below zero apparently causes problems for aeroplanes in the Prairie provinces. We were scheduled to depart at 6.30am January 13th Saskatoon-Calgary-Cancun but received word of cancelation the day before. They rescheduled us to depart at 7.30pm  but added in an overnight stay in Vancouver (now SK-VAN-CAN). On Saturday morning we learned of yet another change, slightly better, to SK-Edmonton overnight-CAN, however by Saturday afternoon we got another notice of de-icing problems, crew delays, and departure changes upon which we would be updated within the hour. We waited for the update but no update came. Google informed us that our flight was canceled. Westjet had apparently abandoned us! At the same time, adding to our stress was that Nick was travelling with us but on a separate booking and his cancelations did not coincide with ours. First he would possibly land in Cancun before us, then with his reschedule he would lose almost a week of his vacation.  It was...

Trolley Tour in Campeche

We booked this quintessential tourist activity and it was charming. It was of course, a little less amazing when the tour took us around the very neighbourhood in which we were staying, so maybe we should have done the tour earlier on! Independence Square Fisherman statue outside our local OXXO
