Travel in the times of the Covid - Week 10

Monday Jan 4

Back to work and school. Got a big grocery haul and planning to eat at home most of the week. Bought a roasted chicken for lunch and made pasta with pesto for supper. Evening stroll for ice cream and steps.

Amazing murals everywhere!

Tuesday Jan 5

Nice lunchtime walk on 5th, visited the beach at Zenzi, very receded and not very many people. Chicken salad for lunch, burgers for supper.

Wednesday Jan 6

Jordan ordered pastries for home delivery on Whatsapp.

140 pesos/$9, delivered!

Back to the stadium to work off some overindulgence.

Thursday Jan 7

We went for a lunchtime walk and spent a little time on the beach - we haven't actually been into the sea for a while now as it has been either cooler or too sargassummy. Ate at home again and got rained out from an evening walk.

Trying restaurant styling of basic food!!

Friday Jan 8

Delicious lunch at El Fogon followed by a nice walk with Connor while Jordan got back to the grind.
Pork and cheese madness!

Prepared taco and Homer's arrachera (beef) torte.

It was a bit cooler tonight so we didn't go out but we had lots of laughs at Friday night Euchre.
Girls lost!

Saturday Dec 9

The beautiful weather returned and we had a fabulous beach day and light lunch at Tarraya with our friend Debbie. The sargassum was gone, the sun was beaming and the Xmas crowds had dissipated.

Hot enough to finally get into the water again!

Later that evening, we took Connor out for supper at La Taberna which, again, was fantastic!
Satay chicken

BBQ wings

Coconut shrimp and 2x1 strawberry coladas.

Sunday Dec 10

Jordan and Connor took a ride to the Sunday Market in search of shorts but had no luck. We decided to give Casa Sofia another try as we were craving their delicious pasta. The food was pretty good but the service was rubbish so we will definitely not return!

Connor picked up a couple of t-shirts at a bargain store on Juarez and we finished the evening off with a quiet neighbourhood walk for ice cream.

Our new Airbnb - expectation v reality (Feb 10-Mar 9, 2024)

Our Airbnb experiences have generally been very good with accurate photos and helpful hosts. This time was disappointing. The condo is very modern with 10ft ceilings and in a great location but it was clear that the management company is not aware or keeping up with needed repairs - sunken sofa cushions, lifting tiles, calcified faucet, stained sheets, and completely broken patio furniture that had just been left!! Their response to our messages was quite unhelpful - they didn't seem to care that much so our honest review will reflect this.  Instagram ...   ... reality ...replaced with two mismatched indoor chairs!! Playa as a whole has gotten busier and outside of the reality of inflation and a stronger peso, everything is much more expensive as happens in popular tourist spots. We are going to look at other more affordable places in Mexico to spend the winter months.

Painful winter travel from the Prairies

Minus 30 degrees below zero apparently causes problems for aeroplanes in the Prairie provinces. We were scheduled to depart at 6.30am January 13th Saskatoon-Calgary-Cancun but received word of cancelation the day before. They rescheduled us to depart at 7.30pm  but added in an overnight stay in Vancouver (now SK-VAN-CAN). On Saturday morning we learned of yet another change, slightly better, to SK-Edmonton overnight-CAN, however by Saturday afternoon we got another notice of de-icing problems, crew delays, and departure changes upon which we would be updated within the hour. We waited for the update but no update came. Google informed us that our flight was canceled. Westjet had apparently abandoned us! At the same time, adding to our stress was that Nick was travelling with us but on a separate booking and his cancelations did not coincide with ours. First he would possibly land in Cancun before us, then with his reschedule he would lose almost a week of his vacation.  It was...

Trolley Tour in Campeche

We booked this quintessential tourist activity and it was charming. It was of course, a little less amazing when the tour took us around the very neighbourhood in which we were staying, so maybe we should have done the tour earlier on! Independence Square Fisherman statue outside our local OXXO
