Travel in the times of the Covid - Week 9

Monday Dec 28

Holiday Monday. Went to the beach. It was really crowded but we found a little spaced area. The water was a bit cool but nice to wade in.

Had supper at La Taverna - such a great restaurant with excellent safety protocols and superb prices!

Cocktails, Chicken stir fry, Chicken cordon bleu, Steak with mushroom sauce, apple basket dessert - 750 pesos/$50!

The repaving of 5th is complete in some areas.

Beautiful colours in the early evening.

Tuesday Dec 29

Back to work for Jordan, cleaning and packing for me. It was a beautiful evening for a walk on 38th Street and to see the full moon at the pier.

Thursday Dec 31

New Year's Eve and moving day! We dragged our cases the three blocks to our new home. It is an older condo but very spacious and quiet. There were a couple of problems that needed to be addressed but we got super fast responses from the host. In the first world problem way, we asked the host if there was any way the dinosaur of a TV with no external inputs could be updated and 2 days later a new smart tv was delivered! The air conditioner in the bedroom also needed to be fixed and a repairman came quickly too.

Our bedrooms - last two windows on 2nd floor

NYE lunch at Los Hijos tostadaria

Delicious tuna burger, so big that Jordan and I split one, but Homer ate the whole thing!

Busy beach in the distance.

Beautiful last day of the 2020

Around 8 pm, we went for a walk to see what kind of celebrations were taking place and were surprised to see that it was kind of quiet and some places weren't even open (turns out they were saving up for the BIG partying closer to midnight).

We made it to midnight!

Friday January 1

We were craving birria tacos but, when we arrived, it was closed. El Fogon was also closed so we settled on a small place nearby called Fuentes de Soda Paquita.

Just part of the extensive menu.

I tried sinchronizadas and cafe de olla ...

... and a nice fresh fruit plate.

We watched Contagion in the evening.

Saturday Dec 2nd

Today we received a new updated TV and the AC got repaired.

Still craving birria, we went to it again around 1 pm - it was open BUT they had run out of the birria meat! Once again we had to settle for an alternative, El Fogon had a long wait line so we tried Don Sirloin which ended up being pretty delicious! (Note, the boys are getting annoyed at me still taking photos of the food all the time!!).

Sunday Jan 3

Went to sit on the beach for an hour before meeting up with David and Yazda, friends from Puerto Morelos. Had a great time chatting over lunch at La Tarraya. It was really nice to talk to people other than ourselves but of course, a lot of the conversation was about living in the times of the covid!

The sargassum made an unwelcome return but it was a beautiful day.

Our new Airbnb - expectation v reality (Feb 10-Mar 9, 2024)

Our Airbnb experiences have generally been very good with accurate photos and helpful hosts. This time was disappointing. The condo is very modern with 10ft ceilings and in a great location but it was clear that the management company is not aware or keeping up with needed repairs - sunken sofa cushions, lifting tiles, calcified faucet, stained sheets, and completely broken patio furniture that had just been left!! Their response to our messages was quite unhelpful - they didn't seem to care that much so our honest review will reflect this.  Instagram ...   ... reality ...replaced with two mismatched indoor chairs!! Playa as a whole has gotten busier and outside of the reality of inflation and a stronger peso, everything is much more expensive as happens in popular tourist spots. We are going to look at other more affordable places in Mexico to spend the winter months.

Painful winter travel from the Prairies

Minus 30 degrees below zero apparently causes problems for aeroplanes in the Prairie provinces. We were scheduled to depart at 6.30am January 13th Saskatoon-Calgary-Cancun but received word of cancelation the day before. They rescheduled us to depart at 7.30pm  but added in an overnight stay in Vancouver (now SK-VAN-CAN). On Saturday morning we learned of yet another change, slightly better, to SK-Edmonton overnight-CAN, however by Saturday afternoon we got another notice of de-icing problems, crew delays, and departure changes upon which we would be updated within the hour. We waited for the update but no update came. Google informed us that our flight was canceled. Westjet had apparently abandoned us! At the same time, adding to our stress was that Nick was travelling with us but on a separate booking and his cancelations did not coincide with ours. First he would possibly land in Cancun before us, then with his reschedule he would lose almost a week of his vacation.  It was...

Trolley Tour in Campeche

We booked this quintessential tourist activity and it was charming. It was of course, a little less amazing when the tour took us around the very neighbourhood in which we were staying, so maybe we should have done the tour earlier on! Independence Square Fisherman statue outside our local OXXO
