Guadalajara, MX, Week 2+: Jan 13-21

Day 8 Tuesday 13

Tried the local favourite tejuino drink, a fermented corn-based beverage served with a scoop of shaved lemon sorbet - tasted salty and sour!).
Next was onto Mercardo San Juan de Dios (biggest indoor market in MX). Tried to find La Torta Loca but couldn't, so gave up the endless search. We stopped for a beer at Cantina La Fuente (oldest cantina in town). By now, we were starving and the day was saved by a fabulous late lunch at Il Campione (stuffed portobello, boneless, arrachera torta).

Day 9 Wed 14

Picked up laundry, had a walk and enjoyed ice-cream then made a bank stop. Nice evening weather. We tried Shiraoitsuki Japanese restaurant for supper, and it did not disappoint.

Jordan tried a regional specialty, jericalla (like creme brule).

Day 10 Thursday 15

Phoned Heidi, walk and coffee, chicken/mole at home.

Day 11 Friday 16

We took an Uber to the Mirador de la Independencia, just outside the city and enjoyed stunning views of the Oblatos Canyon and a hilly hike. The site has a restaurant with a view, and we had a delicious lunch of chamorro (pork shank) and shrimp al mojo (garlic). We took the Macrobus back with its own express lane (9.50 pesos, 20 min). A  kind man paid for us as we struggled to navigate the payment system. We strolled through Parque Morelos with its many statues and caught a little drizzle on the walk home.

Day 12 Saturday 17

Brunch at Casa Dolores (torta ahogada/enchilada mole).

Popular regional dish (pork sandwich drowned in tomato sauce)

View from the restaurant balcony

We grabbed some fruit/veg at Mercado Alcalde, one block past Ave Alcalde and chatted with a vendor who was keen to practice a little English with us.

DAY 13 Sunday 18

Took Didi to the Colonia America neighbourhood and walked along the main street, which was closed to traffic for the Sunday ride. We had a healthy lunch at the trendy Gabinete (salmon pasta, Greek salad), which justified our stop for beer at Santas Alitas on the walk home! We made seasoned beef patties for supper.

Templo El Expiatorio

Day 14 Monday 19

Today we just chilled in the morning, as my knee pain was bad when I got up.. We had appetizers for lunch at Il Campione, and picked up a grilled chicken from Pollo Asado - smoky and delicious.

Grilled shrimp/octopus pasta

Chipotle shrimp bites

Asparagus with parmesan

Day 15 Tuesday 20

Cold with light rain today. Dropped off laundry, picked up antibiotics and travel sickness pills from the farmácia. Chicken lunch and games at home.

Day 16 Wednesday 21

Walked south of Centro to Jardin de San Francisco and its two churches across from each other, followed by an amazing lunch at El Colkin seafood restaurant. We did some final sightseeing in the central plaza before finishing packing.

Our new Airbnb - expectation v reality (Feb 10-Mar 9, 2024)

Our Airbnb experiences have generally been very good with accurate photos and helpful hosts. This time was disappointing. The condo is very modern with 10ft ceilings and in a great location but it was clear that the management company is not aware or keeping up with needed repairs - sunken sofa cushions, lifting tiles, calcified faucet, stained sheets, and completely broken patio furniture that had just been left!! Their response to our messages was quite unhelpful - they didn't seem to care that much so our honest review will reflect this.  Instagram ...   ... reality ...replaced with two mismatched indoor chairs!! Playa as a whole has gotten busier and outside of the reality of inflation and a stronger peso, everything is much more expensive as happens in popular tourist spots. We are going to look at other more affordable places in Mexico to spend the winter months.

Painful winter travel from the Prairies

Minus 30 degrees below zero apparently causes problems for aeroplanes in the Prairie provinces. We were scheduled to depart at 6.30am January 13th Saskatoon-Calgary-Cancun but received word of cancelation the day before. They rescheduled us to depart at 7.30pm  but added in an overnight stay in Vancouver (now SK-VAN-CAN). On Saturday morning we learned of yet another change, slightly better, to SK-Edmonton overnight-CAN, however by Saturday afternoon we got another notice of de-icing problems, crew delays, and departure changes upon which we would be updated within the hour. We waited for the update but no update came. Google informed us that our flight was canceled. Westjet had apparently abandoned us! At the same time, adding to our stress was that Nick was travelling with us but on a separate booking and his cancelations did not coincide with ours. First he would possibly land in Cancun before us, then with his reschedule he would lose almost a week of his vacation.  It was...

Trolley Tour in Campeche

We booked this quintessential tourist activity and it was charming. It was of course, a little less amazing when the tour took us around the very neighbourhood in which we were staying, so maybe we should have done the tour earlier on! Independence Square Fisherman statue outside our local OXXO
