Travel in the times of the Covid - Week 1

Sat Oct 31

The alarm went off at 5.30 am giving us an hour to ready ourselves and shut down the house. The uber we called was delayed and then got lost in the labyrinth of airport reconstruction but we had allowed some extra time.

The airport was quite empty as we dropped our bags at 7.15 am and security flowed smoothly.

The flight was on time but there would be no food service on board, luckily we had packed sandwiches and snacks. The plane was at full capacity due to the reduction in flights and masks were mandatory. The landing in Cancun was delayed due to poor visibility and heavy rain and the pilot had to make two attempts!

Jordan showing improper wearing of mask!!

We were picked up by our driver, Jason, and travelled through 2 completely flooded sections on the highway to Playa.

Our Airbnb was beautiful and as described.

Our first-night supper was at Buzos seafood restaurant (MX $800/CDN $53) shrimp 3 ways (bacon, mango, coconut) and battered shrimp tacos followed by a marquesita before we went to bed exhausted!

Sun Nov 1

We had a late, lazy morning before heading to get some basics from the Mega grocery store.  It was not very busy and we saw the Youtube vloggers For the Road, who we have been following on their Mexican travels. Good safety protocols are being followed. Our central location perfect for walking to everything.

We met up with our friend Debbie for supper at Zitla which had really good food and service then walked to 5th Ave. It was pretty busy in the construction area but it was Dia de Muertos weekend. The level of vendor hassling was noticeable reduced and less pushy.  On the way home we could not buy alcohol from OXXO after 6 on Sunday so made a note of that for future important reference!!

Monday Nov 2nd

Walked down to City Hall which very quiet and empty and had breakfast at Cafe Andrade. The rain made a very hard and heavy reappearance so we took a taxi home.

It was a good thing we went out when we did as it rained ALL day and the forecast is for rain all week.  Got a break at 6pm so went out to Chiltepin and had fab food, and a quick walk on 5th which was quite a bit less busy.

Grilled fish with garlic for me.

Tues Nov 3  - Back to work

Jordan began work with a view at a leisurely pace as we are now 2 hours ahead of Calgary. Connor also enjoyed the lie in and later morning before online classes - the internet is weak in the bedrooms but he is happy to perch on the high stools with headphones.  In between lessons we hit the gym for our one-hour private use.

With a break in the rain and hunger setting in, we headed down to get cash and a delicious lunch at El Fogon (al pastor, taco loco) so cheap - $440 inc.drinks. Beer and snacks at home later and Homer played online games with friends. The rain continued relentlessly.

Wed Nov 4th

Took an early walk to the beach at Mamitas - very rough and eroded!

Picked up groceries at Mega, lunch at home then, out for an errand at Walmart (only one family member allowed). Jordan used the Biciplaya bike share system and Connor and I walked home.

MX$700/$CDN 45

Been getting lots of steps in!

Made pasta and meat sauce, took a stroll down 5th then had a marquesita for dessert.

Thurs Nov 5th

Heavy rain today so unpacked a bit, took a lunchtime stroll to the pier at Constituentes but the beach was closed and the waves were crashing in. Bought Eurogrill sausages for lunch at home. Salad for supper and started watching Undercover on Netflix.

Fri Nov 6th

Continuous heavy rain kept us home all morning but a little break allowed us to grab lunch at EL Fogon again and then picked up a few things at Mega.  There are a lot of flooded areas. Jordan did a couple of errands using Biciplaya. Connor played games with his friends and Jordan and I went out for a bit of fresh air which ended up being a 90 min stroll down 5th and back on 10th and picking up 1/2 kilo of cochinita pibil (pulled pork) at La Cochi Loca.

Sat Nov 7th

After a morning workout at the gym, the boys rode to Chedraui in search of a standing fan. At 6pm we met Debbie at Los Hijos tostaderia - amazing seafood dishes. Then we wandered down to the city hall night market ... and once again had marquesitas!

Banana, nutella and cheese filling!

Sun Nov 8th

One week in, this was the first day that felt like a pre-Covid vacation. 30°, blue skies, sandy beach and lunch at our favourite beach club La Tarraya.

The young, energetic one had a gym workout when we returned from our already long walk.

We finished the day off with a walk to Paleteria Gerry for a little ice cream treat.

Our new Airbnb - expectation v reality (Feb 10-Mar 9, 2024)

Our Airbnb experiences have generally been very good with accurate photos and helpful hosts. This time was disappointing. The condo is very modern with 10ft ceilings and in a great location but it was clear that the management company is not aware or keeping up with needed repairs - sunken sofa cushions, lifting tiles, calcified faucet, stained sheets, and completely broken patio furniture that had just been left!! Their response to our messages was quite unhelpful - they didn't seem to care that much so our honest review will reflect this.  Instagram ...   ... reality ...replaced with two mismatched indoor chairs!! Playa as a whole has gotten busier and outside of the reality of inflation and a stronger peso, everything is much more expensive as happens in popular tourist spots. We are going to look at other more affordable places in Mexico to spend the winter months.

Painful winter travel from the Prairies

Minus 30 degrees below zero apparently causes problems for aeroplanes in the Prairie provinces. We were scheduled to depart at 6.30am January 13th Saskatoon-Calgary-Cancun but received word of cancelation the day before. They rescheduled us to depart at 7.30pm  but added in an overnight stay in Vancouver (now SK-VAN-CAN). On Saturday morning we learned of yet another change, slightly better, to SK-Edmonton overnight-CAN, however by Saturday afternoon we got another notice of de-icing problems, crew delays, and departure changes upon which we would be updated within the hour. We waited for the update but no update came. Google informed us that our flight was canceled. Westjet had apparently abandoned us! At the same time, adding to our stress was that Nick was travelling with us but on a separate booking and his cancelations did not coincide with ours. First he would possibly land in Cancun before us, then with his reschedule he would lose almost a week of his vacation.  It was...

Trolley Tour in Campeche

We booked this quintessential tourist activity and it was charming. It was of course, a little less amazing when the tour took us around the very neighbourhood in which we were staying, so maybe we should have done the tour earlier on! Independence Square Fisherman statue outside our local OXXO
