Travels in the times of the Covid - Week 2

Mon Nov 9

So ... life goes on as usual even in a warm climate. Took the dirty clothing to the 'lavendaria' - wash, dry and fold service for only 14 pesos/kilo - $109, but it would not be ready for 2 days.

Work and school day, then took Connor for a late-afternoon walk to the beach at 38th - very crowded and one which to avoid at that time of day. Then we all went out to 10th Ave for a slice of pizza at Mama Mia and a marquesita with fresh strawberries at City Hall.

Tues Nov 10

Today was overcast and a fresh 24°. Decided to wash the sheets at home as we only have one set.  Jordan worked and Connor's morning class was cancelled so he had a review morning. Ate a simple lunch at home.

Scramble eggs with ham and refried beans.

After a swift afternoon walk to the beach, I attempted to make supper at home with a thin cut beef I thought looked good at the store - it was tough and probably salted so when I added salsa and hot sauce, it just produced a salty disaster! Definitely dining out tomorrow!!

Wed Nov 11

Remembrance Day in Canada so no school or work. Replenished stash of pesos at ATM then stocked up on groceries. Had another delicious lunch at El Fogon and picked up laundry.

Our waistlines will not thank us for this overindulgence!!

Beautifully folded and fresh scent.

We walked our lunch off along the beach. There were sections completely eroded but it was nice to have toes in the sand and water.

Observations - it hasn't rained for a few days but the temperature is still just pleasant - it hasn't felt hot enough to drive us into the sea or even the beautiful pool right outside our patio! On the plus side, we haven't had to run the air conditioner which can get quite costly!

Thurs Nov 12

Another decent day. Finally made it back to the gym, cleaned the apartment then took a lunchtime walk to Mamitas Beach - the water had receded and the sandy area was deeper and stunning. It was pretty busy for a weekday afternoon. Our timing was good because just like that, the rain came back hard!

Friday Nov 13

I got my exercise walking to La Tarraya then Jordan rode down for his lunch break - had margaritas and shrimp Veracruz tacos.

While Connor played online with his friends, we ventured out in search of live music at the Caiman Tugurio. The instruments were set up for the scheduled 8pm performance. We had to buy food if wanted to drink. We were not really hungry but ordered a delicious crepe to share - chicken, orange/chilli. After over half an hour of patient anticipation, the band packed up their equipment and left - not a note was played! Music FAIL! Oh well, we took a stroll on 1st as 5th was super crowded. Tourism in that area seems to be increasing.

Saturday Nov 14

The cleaner came by at 10.30am for the mid-stay cleaning - we knew some cleaning was included but not when, so I was kicking myself for cleaning everything two days earlier! Anyway, he did a really thorough job. Took Connor for smoothies at Nativo then Jordan and I rode down to the beach as Connor did not want to come.  It was really lovely, the weather was smoking hot, and we finally got in the water!

After a refreshing cocktail and a couple of tacos at La Tarraya, we made our way home. The reconstruction of 5th Ave is pretty haphazard and a long way from being finished but a couple of blocks are almost completed.

Finished section between 4th & 6th St.

6th St.

Took an evening walk on 30th Ave, had ice cream and found a place to try for breakfast - it would appear that this Covid vacation is all about eating!!

Good thing we're getting lots of steps in.

Our new Airbnb - expectation v reality (Feb 10-Mar 9, 2024)

Our Airbnb experiences have generally been very good with accurate photos and helpful hosts. This time was disappointing. The condo is very modern with 10ft ceilings and in a great location but it was clear that the management company is not aware or keeping up with needed repairs - sunken sofa cushions, lifting tiles, calcified faucet, stained sheets, and completely broken patio furniture that had just been left!! Their response to our messages was quite unhelpful - they didn't seem to care that much so our honest review will reflect this.  Instagram ...   ... reality ...replaced with two mismatched indoor chairs!! Playa as a whole has gotten busier and outside of the reality of inflation and a stronger peso, everything is much more expensive as happens in popular tourist spots. We are going to look at other more affordable places in Mexico to spend the winter months.

Painful winter travel from the Prairies

Minus 30 degrees below zero apparently causes problems for aeroplanes in the Prairie provinces. We were scheduled to depart at 6.30am January 13th Saskatoon-Calgary-Cancun but received word of cancelation the day before. They rescheduled us to depart at 7.30pm  but added in an overnight stay in Vancouver (now SK-VAN-CAN). On Saturday morning we learned of yet another change, slightly better, to SK-Edmonton overnight-CAN, however by Saturday afternoon we got another notice of de-icing problems, crew delays, and departure changes upon which we would be updated within the hour. We waited for the update but no update came. Google informed us that our flight was canceled. Westjet had apparently abandoned us! At the same time, adding to our stress was that Nick was travelling with us but on a separate booking and his cancelations did not coincide with ours. First he would possibly land in Cancun before us, then with his reschedule he would lose almost a week of his vacation.  It was...

Trolley Tour in Campeche

We booked this quintessential tourist activity and it was charming. It was of course, a little less amazing when the tour took us around the very neighbourhood in which we were staying, so maybe we should have done the tour earlier on! Independence Square Fisherman statue outside our local OXXO
