Travels in the times of the Covid - Week 5

Monday Nov 30

Moving day. Had to say goodbye to the Airbnb that we really loved. The price for December was triple what we paid for November. Our new place is just 5 minutes away and a little closer to the beach. It is a condo-hotel suite, 2 bed, 2-1/2 bath, quite a bit smaller and not as well equipped but will do nicely for the month. Air conditioning is included so at least there will be no unexpected charge at the end! We had lunch at Chiltepin and got a few groceries in the evening.

Our unit is bottom right above the garage.

Tuesday Dec 1

Unpacked, then took a walk/ride to the fruit market at Calle 2 & Av. 25 - we really need to incorporate some more fruit and veg into our diet!!

We tried out an alternative taco tonight - Lebanese tacos at Bait Lajam with a 2x3 special. The tacos are huge and filled with tender meat and onions with about 7 different sauce options. They are around 60 pesos a piece so really good value.

Rolling his eyes as I request yet another photo!

It's messy and they don't have forks so be sure to have some sanitizer and wipes on hand!!

We walked supper off and Connor found a football jersey he had been longing for on sale on 5th Ave.

Wednesday Dec 2

Jordan and I began the day with a nice walk to the pier and along 5th - where the reconstruction is still happening but still very slowly.

The 3 of us went for a delicious lunch at Birria and had the 'golden' tacos - kind of like a grilled meat and cheese tortilla drenched in birria consome.

Thursday Nov 3rd

Rode up to Loncheria Dona Juanita.

Mole chicken again!

Chicken tostadas

Playa has so much variety so we ordered sushi for takeout - so yummy and a great deal on 2 x1 nights - 300 pesos/$20 CAD.

Tempura shrimp, crunchy shrimp, dynamite crab and salmon rolls

Night view from the rooftop

Friday Nov 4

All three of us went for lunch at La Tarraya. Connor is still not much of a fan of beach walking, unless absolutely necessary so he rode home. The beach was very eroded again but the water was clear and it was not very busy at all.

There is supposed to be a nice seating area surrounding the statue ... eventually!

Love that feeling!

Sand erosion creates a wall.

Exposed roots that once were covered by sandy beach.

Later that evening we went down to City Hall which is even more decked out for Xmas and we enjoyed some lovely Mexican music.

Saturday Nov 5

Today was smoking hot! Dropped some laundry at yet another lavendaria then rode down to the beach. It was perfect at the spot we usually head to in front of Fundadores Park with lots of space on the beach and in the water. We spent over an hour bobbing in the waves then grabbed a drink and a ceviche at La Tarraya.

I was finally pleased when I collected my laundry with the express service requested and smelling wonderfully sanitized (6.8 kg for 200 pesos/$13 CAD)!

We got the teenager out of the house for a walk on 5th Ave. It was very busy and alive and we are definitely noticing more and more national and international tourists, out and about. If you head north it tends to be less crowded which is what we did.

We then had our standing weekend game of Euchre with Jackie and Gord.

We didn't get the memo about smiling!!

Sunday Nov 6

Rained pretty much all day until about 4pm. We went to Walmart for supplies but we're horrified to find we could not buy alcohol in the store after 5pm and we were in the checkout at about 3 minutes after!! Had a lovely supper at El Fogon. I have been experiencing some stomach problems so the simple chicken fajitas were a good choice. We haven't been eating enough vegetables so going to incorporate more next week.

Arrachera and AL Pastor meats.

Connor LOVES marquesitas.

Night walk on 5th Ave.

38th Street is really pretty.

Night all!

Our new Airbnb - expectation v reality (Feb 10-Mar 9, 2024)

Our Airbnb experiences have generally been very good with accurate photos and helpful hosts. This time was disappointing. The condo is very modern with 10ft ceilings and in a great location but it was clear that the management company is not aware or keeping up with needed repairs - sunken sofa cushions, lifting tiles, calcified faucet, stained sheets, and completely broken patio furniture that had just been left!! Their response to our messages was quite unhelpful - they didn't seem to care that much so our honest review will reflect this.  Instagram ...   ... reality ...replaced with two mismatched indoor chairs!! Playa as a whole has gotten busier and outside of the reality of inflation and a stronger peso, everything is much more expensive as happens in popular tourist spots. We are going to look at other more affordable places in Mexico to spend the winter months.

Painful winter travel from the Prairies

Minus 30 degrees below zero apparently causes problems for aeroplanes in the Prairie provinces. We were scheduled to depart at 6.30am January 13th Saskatoon-Calgary-Cancun but received word of cancelation the day before. They rescheduled us to depart at 7.30pm  but added in an overnight stay in Vancouver (now SK-VAN-CAN). On Saturday morning we learned of yet another change, slightly better, to SK-Edmonton overnight-CAN, however by Saturday afternoon we got another notice of de-icing problems, crew delays, and departure changes upon which we would be updated within the hour. We waited for the update but no update came. Google informed us that our flight was canceled. Westjet had apparently abandoned us! At the same time, adding to our stress was that Nick was travelling with us but on a separate booking and his cancelations did not coincide with ours. First he would possibly land in Cancun before us, then with his reschedule he would lose almost a week of his vacation.  It was...

Trolley Tour in Campeche

We booked this quintessential tourist activity and it was charming. It was of course, a little less amazing when the tour took us around the very neighbourhood in which we were staying, so maybe we should have done the tour earlier on! Independence Square Fisherman statue outside our local OXXO
