Travels in the times of the Covid - Week 7

Monday Dec 14

Construction work in the building next door made for a very noisy day of drilling and hammering, so we escaped to the rooftop at lunch and then Connor and I went for a long walk. Jordan has honed the ability to tune out surrounding sound luckily.

Tuesday Dec 15

Discovered Papa Charly - brilliant lunch.

Also sushi 2x1 Tuesday!!

Wednesday Dec 18

Construction noise again so walked to Juarez and had street cart food. Games on rooftop.

Thursday Dec 17

Construction again so Jordan has moved up to rooftop serving WiFi from his phone.

Finally made it to Cerveceria Chapultapec - a chain of restaurants where everything on the menu is tapas style for 23 pesos/$1.50. Worth it, the food was tasty and the tables were well spaced out.

Shrimp po boy

Fried plantains in sweet cream for dessert

Friday Dec 18

Jordan took the day off and it is the last day of school before the Xmas break. Connor had a quiz to do then we did some much need grocery shopping. Jordan and I went down to the beach but were driven home by rain after about 10 minutes.

Today the state announced a mandatory mask law at all times in and out so we wore our masks but I was huffing and puffing so much on the ride uphill from the beach that breathing in all my CO2 was an unpleasant head rush.

The evening was perfect for strolling so we did a long walk along 5th and up to city hall.

Saturday Dec 19th

Beach Day then an evening walk with Homer.

Sunday Dec 20th

Rode to the Sunday Market at Calle 54 between Ave 10 and 30. Hudreds of stalls selling everything - clothing, housewares, shoes, perfume, electrical, fruit and food stands. Kind of crowded for the times of Covid so we just wandered the perimeter. Had an amazing ceviche at La Bomba Jarocha.

In the afternoon we went for a long walk to Playacar to see the amazing homes of Phase One, beach views and the ruins.

On the walk home, I felt really hot and out of sorts and, sure enough, by the evening I was in bed with all the symptoms of stomach flu and hoping it was not the Covid!!

Our new Airbnb - expectation v reality (Feb 10-Mar 9, 2024)

Our Airbnb experiences have generally been very good with accurate photos and helpful hosts. This time was disappointing. The condo is very modern with 10ft ceilings and in a great location but it was clear that the management company is not aware or keeping up with needed repairs - sunken sofa cushions, lifting tiles, calcified faucet, stained sheets, and completely broken patio furniture that had just been left!! Their response to our messages was quite unhelpful - they didn't seem to care that much so our honest review will reflect this.  Instagram ...   ... reality ...replaced with two mismatched indoor chairs!! Playa as a whole has gotten busier and outside of the reality of inflation and a stronger peso, everything is much more expensive as happens in popular tourist spots. We are going to look at other more affordable places in Mexico to spend the winter months.

Painful winter travel from the Prairies

Minus 30 degrees below zero apparently causes problems for aeroplanes in the Prairie provinces. We were scheduled to depart at 6.30am January 13th Saskatoon-Calgary-Cancun but received word of cancelation the day before. They rescheduled us to depart at 7.30pm  but added in an overnight stay in Vancouver (now SK-VAN-CAN). On Saturday morning we learned of yet another change, slightly better, to SK-Edmonton overnight-CAN, however by Saturday afternoon we got another notice of de-icing problems, crew delays, and departure changes upon which we would be updated within the hour. We waited for the update but no update came. Google informed us that our flight was canceled. Westjet had apparently abandoned us! At the same time, adding to our stress was that Nick was travelling with us but on a separate booking and his cancelations did not coincide with ours. First he would possibly land in Cancun before us, then with his reschedule he would lose almost a week of his vacation.  It was...

Trolley Tour in Campeche

We booked this quintessential tourist activity and it was charming. It was of course, a little less amazing when the tour took us around the very neighbourhood in which we were staying, so maybe we should have done the tour earlier on! Independence Square Fisherman statue outside our local OXXO
