Travels in the times of the Covid - Week 6

Monday Dec 7

Groceries, home cooking. Homer mock interview - had to be creative finding something for him to wear as Corona t-shirts and sunglasses don't give off that professional vibe!! Jordan has a swollen Achilles tendon so has to stay off his feet for a few days.

Penne with alfredo sauce and tomatoes

Tuesday Dec 8

Morning walk with Homer, the beach around the pier is filling with more sand coverage again. Lunch at home then played games on the rooftop during lunch break. Still working on the Spanish.

Had takeout Tacos Arabe.

Wednesday Dec 9

Took a walk on the beach then went out for lunch at La Cueva Del Chango, a lovely restaurant in a jungle setting on 38th Street and 5th Ave. The food was phenomenal and it is very reasonably priced for the area.

No cleaning service comes with this month's rental so I did a bit of housework and washed the sheets (there is a swanky washer/dryer combo machine in the apartment but it takes for-ev-ver!!).

Rain has ceased for a while but we are getting some fresher temperatures.

We went out to pick up some basics and have noticed that once again there are more people out and about each week. Obviously, being mindful of community spread of C19, we are probably not going to be visiting the more touristy areas as much during our evening walks.  There also seems to be a very loud family now staying in the adjacent apartment and construction noise is in full swing in the building next door! Yes, we are getting whiney!!

Thursday Dec 10

Connor has a full day of schoolwork today.  There is only one week left and the kids are being reminded to turn in outstanding work and also being given the chance to retake some unit tests.

Short ride to the pier and hung out in the sun during Jordan's break.  Cooked steak for dinner (tenderloin is about $10/kg versus $40 back home). Finished the evening off with a quieter end of 5th Ave walk with Connor.

Friday Dec 11

Connor had a retake exam today then wanted to decompress playing on his Xbox.  Jordan and I went for our customary Friday beach lunch at Tarraya.  The beach was even more erroded but the sea was a beautiful aquamarine.

Yucatecan chicken

Shrimp cocktail

Generous serving of wine!

Saturday Dec 12

Grabbed some goodies from the bakery so Homer had a treat while we headed out for a beach afternoon with Debbie.

Fish empanadas

We needed supplies so we went to Walmart which is much less busy on a Saturday night.

Sunday Dec 13

Walked to a neighborhood above the highway at Constituientes looking for a local restaurant but unfortunately, it was closed. Very empty streets but friendly 'holas' when passing people. Bought mangoes from a street cart - 7 for only 50 pesos.

We played games on the rooftop deck before heading down to La Taberna sports bar for supper where we coveted Homer's garlic covered crispy wings!!

It was just around sunset and the beach area was lovely as people headed home. 5th Avenue wasn't too busy to walk home.

Finished the evening off with Sunday night Euchre.

Our new Airbnb - expectation v reality (Feb 10-Mar 9, 2024)

Our Airbnb experiences have generally been very good with accurate photos and helpful hosts. This time was disappointing. The condo is very modern with 10ft ceilings and in a great location but it was clear that the management company is not aware or keeping up with needed repairs - sunken sofa cushions, lifting tiles, calcified faucet, stained sheets, and completely broken patio furniture that had just been left!! Their response to our messages was quite unhelpful - they didn't seem to care that much so our honest review will reflect this.  Instagram ...   ... reality ...replaced with two mismatched indoor chairs!! Playa as a whole has gotten busier and outside of the reality of inflation and a stronger peso, everything is much more expensive as happens in popular tourist spots. We are going to look at other more affordable places in Mexico to spend the winter months.

Painful winter travel from the Prairies

Minus 30 degrees below zero apparently causes problems for aeroplanes in the Prairie provinces. We were scheduled to depart at 6.30am January 13th Saskatoon-Calgary-Cancun but received word of cancelation the day before. They rescheduled us to depart at 7.30pm  but added in an overnight stay in Vancouver (now SK-VAN-CAN). On Saturday morning we learned of yet another change, slightly better, to SK-Edmonton overnight-CAN, however by Saturday afternoon we got another notice of de-icing problems, crew delays, and departure changes upon which we would be updated within the hour. We waited for the update but no update came. Google informed us that our flight was canceled. Westjet had apparently abandoned us! At the same time, adding to our stress was that Nick was travelling with us but on a separate booking and his cancelations did not coincide with ours. First he would possibly land in Cancun before us, then with his reschedule he would lose almost a week of his vacation.  It was...

Trolley Tour in Campeche

We booked this quintessential tourist activity and it was charming. It was of course, a little less amazing when the tour took us around the very neighbourhood in which we were staying, so maybe we should have done the tour earlier on! Independence Square Fisherman statue outside our local OXXO
