Travels in the times of the Covid - Week 8

Monday Dec 21

It seems to have just been a 24hr stomach flu and I am feeling much better now. Low on energy so we stayed home. Played a couple of games of Kings Cribbage on the rooftop and enjoyed the warm air.

Tuesday Dec 22

Three course lunch (139 pesos/$9.25) at Papa Charly Grill with Debbie before she headed back to the States for Christmas. Ran into Karen Brodie from Belize!

New mural in process.

Wednesday Dec 23

Family beach stroll at lunchtime. La Taberna for supper. 2 x 1 drinks, wings, coconut shrimp, evening walk.

G&T, Blue Hawaiian 56 pesos/$3.10 for 2!

Thursday Dec 24

Jordan worked a half-day then we went for lunch at Cervezeria Chapultepec. In the evening we went for a walk and were surprised by the emptiness of 5th Ave. We later learned that Nochebuena is more of the family time than Christmas Day.

Cool murals around town

Rooftop sunset after gaming

City Hall

Friday Dec 25

Christmas in the sun. Phone and Skype with families.

Lunch at Milo's Cocina Greca courtesy of Jordan's company.

Pork souvlaki

Chicken with feta and spinach, red pepper sauce

Ahi tuna with honey mustard sauce

Later, we decided that we should get a marquesita as has been our regular thing during this trip - well apparently everyone gets marquesitas on Christmas night! Most of the carts had line-ups at City Hall and by the time we got back to our home area, the carts were packed up for the night! 😒

Brightly lit City Hall, serene on Christmas night

Saturday Dec 26

Beach lunch at La Tarraya - the beach was heaving with large groups (probably families together for Christmas) and had receded so much. The quiet part we always went to was full so we didn't spend any time.

Sangria and guacamole

Social distancing?

Went to get groceries and stayed in for movie night and snacks.

Sunday Dec 27

Spanish is still hard but I am enjoying the lessons. Homer surprised us by choosing to do Spanish for one of his electives next semester (he has been a resistant teenager up 'til now!).

Went for a long walk checking out the area across the highway called Ejidal then got Bait Lajam Lebanese tacos and tortas to go.

Unfortunately closed due to Covid

More amazing murals

Legend of the tree.

We were due to leave on December 31st but with the current lockdown, rising case numbers and heavy snowfall in Calgary, we decided to extend our stay and have booked another month of Airbnb at Magaritas II, just a couple of blocks away.

Our new Airbnb - expectation v reality (Feb 10-Mar 9, 2024)

Our Airbnb experiences have generally been very good with accurate photos and helpful hosts. This time was disappointing. The condo is very modern with 10ft ceilings and in a great location but it was clear that the management company is not aware or keeping up with needed repairs - sunken sofa cushions, lifting tiles, calcified faucet, stained sheets, and completely broken patio furniture that had just been left!! Their response to our messages was quite unhelpful - they didn't seem to care that much so our honest review will reflect this.  Instagram ...   ... reality ...replaced with two mismatched indoor chairs!! Playa as a whole has gotten busier and outside of the reality of inflation and a stronger peso, everything is much more expensive as happens in popular tourist spots. We are going to look at other more affordable places in Mexico to spend the winter months.

Painful winter travel from the Prairies

Minus 30 degrees below zero apparently causes problems for aeroplanes in the Prairie provinces. We were scheduled to depart at 6.30am January 13th Saskatoon-Calgary-Cancun but received word of cancelation the day before. They rescheduled us to depart at 7.30pm  but added in an overnight stay in Vancouver (now SK-VAN-CAN). On Saturday morning we learned of yet another change, slightly better, to SK-Edmonton overnight-CAN, however by Saturday afternoon we got another notice of de-icing problems, crew delays, and departure changes upon which we would be updated within the hour. We waited for the update but no update came. Google informed us that our flight was canceled. Westjet had apparently abandoned us! At the same time, adding to our stress was that Nick was travelling with us but on a separate booking and his cancelations did not coincide with ours. First he would possibly land in Cancun before us, then with his reschedule he would lose almost a week of his vacation.  It was...

Trolley Tour in Campeche

We booked this quintessential tourist activity and it was charming. It was of course, a little less amazing when the tour took us around the very neighbourhood in which we were staying, so maybe we should have done the tour earlier on! Independence Square Fisherman statue outside our local OXXO
